From
Business Updates with The Patriot-News:
Developers acquire Midtown Cinema
Harrisburg-based developers Powers & Associates have purchased Midtown Cinema at 215 Reily St. for $375,000.
John Tierney, president of Powers & Associates, said the theater
will continue operating as normal until Powers can move Midtown Cinema
into the Campus Square Building now being built at Third and Reily
streets. The current cinema building will eventually be torn down for
use as temporary parking until a garage is built.
Powers has said it will maintain the current three-theater format of
the cinema. Two theaters will be 40 to 50 seats each while the third
could have up to 150 seats. All three theaters could be showing at the
same time.
In
the meantime, Tierney said Powers is expanding activity at the current
Midtown Cinema by offering morning coffee and light breakfast fare to
midtown workers, students and visitors. The cinema's normal operating
schedule will remain in effect for moviegoers.
Besides Midtown Cinema, the 70,000-square-foot Campus Square is also to
include retail on the first floor and office space in the upper floors.

Friends of Midtown, the neighborhood group of which I am also a board member, made news this week with its whistle campaign.
Check out the story from
ABC27 after the jump.
Safety Whistles Make Way Through Midtown
In response to recent violence in Harrisburg's Midtown section,
leaders are arming residents with a crime prevention tool - small blue
emergency whistles are making their way through Midtown.
The whistles attach to keychains. Local organization "Friends of
Midtown" is distributing them through the area's six neighborhood watch
groups.
"We want to get these widely distributed throughout the community
because the more whistles, the better the effect works," said Chuck
Hamilton, Friends of Midtown's Safety Committee Chairman.
The idea is that a whistle can scare perpetrators away and get the attention of neighbors.
"It's very proactive. It's very safe," said Hamilton. "It's been used
effectively in a variety or urban settings over the years."
Wanda Pritulski has lived in Midtown for 20 years. She agrees that the whistles are a good idea.
"If you see trouble or you are in trouble, you can draw attention to
yourself," Pritulski said. "The more people are aware of what's going
on, the better off you're going to be."
Midtown resident Mike Vanjura is not so sure that whistles are the solution.
"The mayor thinks that carrying whistles is going to be the end-all, be-all to prevent muggings from happening," he said.
Friends of Midtown said the whistles are a way to stand up for their community.
"We're watching. And we're bonding," Hamilton said. "And we have
numerous groups and we're active and we're being proactive in
initiating these campaigns."
If you live in Midtown and would like a whistle, contact your
neighborhood watch group. If you do not know which group is yours,
Friends of Midtown can direct you to the right people.

One of Sunday’s attacks happened at the intersection of
Second and Union Streets, which is awfully close to downtown. ABC27 has
the story; if anyone else covered it, I hadn’t noticed.
For the record, I still don’t feel that downtown — or midtown, for that matter — is unsafe. I think this is a surge in crime due to factors that can be debated in volumes. While there may be different groups of criminals at work, I do believe that all of the assaults are related in at least some passing way. I think it’s somewhat obvious that this started with a Group Of Bored Kids deciding to kick their shenanigans up to the criminal level a few times. Then Their Friends heard about it and did the same, and now Some Guys From Elsewhere have read about it and joined in the fray.
Second and Union is not a bad part of town. But it’s a half block off Forster and a stone’s throw from Restaurant Row. What happens if this creeps up to Second and State? I know a lot of downtown revelers have basically ignored the attacks and kept on partying.
