I’m doing another show. It’s not a relaunch. It’s not a CD Release party. It’s not really to celebrate anything in particular. Just a great night of music. Eight bands. Eight bucks. August 8 at 8. Watch this space for the full details….soon.

Carlisle Area Local Producer Tour & Lunch The Carlisle & Newville areas have exploded with local producers selling fresh organic vegetables, free-range chickens and eggs, artisan cheese and handmade crafts. The area also boasts two vibrant farmers markets. Food writer and Slow Food Harrisburg member Kay Graham has put together a great program. At 9am assemble at Piatto, 22 West Pomfret Street, for coffee and pastries. The group will tour the two Carlisle Farms Markets, then carpool to explore the local farm stands, including Otterbein Farms. Kay will distribute a map to help with navigation. The group will return to Piatto’s garden for lunch. Either bring a dish to share made with local ingredients or sample some dishes made specially for us by Piatto and California Cafe. Then around 4pm, the garden hosts a free concert, the Gabjo Playboys specializing in Parisian-style jazz. 9:00 - Meet at Piatto for coffee and artisan pastries. 9:30 - Tour of the two Carlisle Farmers Markets 11:00 - Tour of local producers 2:00 - Lunch at Piatto 4:00 - Jazz in the park

This Weekend: I Strive To Be More Eventful & More Entertaining

Tags: , ,

Sometimes I feel like I’m the worst Events & Entertainment blogger ever. Right now, I don’t attend all that many events, and I’m afraid that as a result, my writing is not all that entertaining (see what I did there?). That should all be changing soon. Ever since I started writing in this space, I have been living in Boiling Springs. In reality, my little town is not all that far from Harrisburg, but it is an inconvenient drive when I want to go out and do something. For instance, this weekend I’d love to come to Harrisburg, have dinner at Bayou and grab a few drinks somewhere. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like driving home, changing, rounding up company, driving back to Harrisburg and eventually driving home again. Luckily, in the next few weeks I’ll be moving into my sweet new loft apartment in Lemoyne, and then I’ll be a little bit more fun. Bear with me. If I were going out, tonight I would probably consider checking out French Canadian proto-punk band Les Breastfeeders (charming name, I know. That’s them up there in the picture) at Spy Club. Or I might have gone to the Harrisburg Italian Festival for the homemade spaghetti dinner. Only $7 per person. Seriously, if you’ve ever waited an hour and a half for a table at the Olive Garden, it’s crazy not to go to this. Homemade bread! The Festival continues Saturday with a bocce tournament, which I would love to play in. I consider myself to be a formidable bocce player. Also Saturday is the Fort Halifax Music Festival, which is headlined by Beatlemania Now. If you’re looking for something a bit unique, the 4th Annual McGinley School Feile will be at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg East. It’s an Irish dance competition, and I can almost guarantee you’ve never been to one of those. The City Islanders are also at home against Western Mass. Sunday, is the Whitaker Center Wedding Showcase, so, um, that should be fun, right? There’s also a flower walk at Wildwood Lake for those who love to be outside, and the Downtown Comi-Con for people who don’t. Juuusssstttt kidding, it looks like an awesome event. As for me, I don’t care what I do, but I need Mexican food and I need it now. Random craving. Have fun kids.

Annual Blues Festival Promises Big Eats and Guaranteed Entertainment

Tags: , , ,

Saturday, August 2nd 2008 starting at 1:30pm one of Harrisburg’s best annual blues concerts is set to kickoff in grand fashion with a lineup of performances including the Krypton City Blues Revue, Zora Young, Gary Belloma & The Blue Bombers, Nate Myers & The Aces, The New Experience Variety Band, and Tomm Dunn Delta Blues Soloist. 6th annual “The Lost, The Found & The Dearly Departed” will take place at the Harrisburg Postal Employees Picnic Grounds, 1500 Roberts Valley Road, Harrisburg. Attendees are encouraged to come hungry, as the $20 entry fee ($25 at the door) not only provides your ticket to incredible entertainment all day, but also access to as much pork BBQ, fried catfish, chicken, fresh cut fries, baked beans and salad you can stomach! The event is totally BYOB which is mainly the reason so many attendees bring camping equipment and stay the night, as the party continues long after the music has stopped playing. While this annual festival remains for the most part under the radar, trust me you won’t want to miss out on the revelry.

Don’t Miss the 80th Annual Jubilee Day in Mechanicsburg, PA - June 19th, 2008

Tags: , ,

This Thursday there’s a  good reason to take a personal day from work - Mechanicsburg’s 80th Annual Jubilee Day. Here’s a tasty tidbit of trivia about the event; it’s the biggest one day street festival on the entire east coast and anticipates over 60,000 people to be in attendance this year. Wow! It’s hard for me to picture that many people fitting into little Mechanicsburg. This year’s event will take place from 10am-9pm and boasts over 50 food vendors, 2 live music/entertainment stages, amusement rides, and plenty of vendors selling various arts and crafts. I’m not sure where the best place to park would be as this will be my first year at Jubilee Day, but from the event website: “There will be free shuttle bus service from the following locations. Mechanicsburg Senior High School, off Williams Grove Road, and Immanuel Alliance Church at 800 South Market Street.”
